German Shepherd Breed Story

A relatively young breed, the German Shepherd dog first came to recognition in the late nineteenth century thanks mainly to the efforts of Captain Max von Stephanitz. Attending a dog show in 1889, von Stephanitz was so impressed by one particular herding dog’s characteristics that he simply had to purchase it. The dog, Hektor Linksrhein, was renamed Horand von Grafrath and became the first registered German Shepherd dog.

• Color: Coat is reddish-brown, brown, and/or light gray.
• Markings: Solid black and sable, with dark overcast. Black saddle and mask.
